How much does a Recreational Swim Pond Cost?

There are multiple factors that influence the price of a swim pond. Design and intended site are important as there are many unique styles and construction methods available. The cost and availability of local materials can vary greatly from region to region as well. Because of these flexible factors, swim ponds range widely in price, anywhere from $85,000 to $250,000.

A basic recreational swim pond is about 25ft overall, includes a 15ft swimming area, all rocked and graveled, features underwater lights, starter water plants, and a built-in biological filtration system.

For around $10-15K extra, you can add a naturalistic waterfall or additional geology around the recreational swimming pond. This price pays for a roughly 20 tons large rock from a quarry and the subsequent materials and labor.

Swim ponds have all the benefits of traditional swimming pools, without all the harsh chemicals that can damage your skin and your hair and kill natural flora and fauna in your yard. If you want to swim in an environmentally-friendly and natural pond so you can relax in the water without stressing about harmful chemicals, this pond is for you.

The Bigger, the Better!

The bigger, more customized a swim pond is, the higher the cost will be. The largest and most elaborate construction projects range anywhere from $95,000 to $250,000.

Many of the reasons people might not want a pond actually happen to be myths that simply are not true! If you’ve heard any of the common pond myths, you may be feeling apprehensive about owning one of your own. Rather than a maintenance nightmare, a properly designed and installed pond provides incomparable beauty and relaxation that no other gardening element provides. Pond ownership is a true pleasure you don’t want to miss!

Pond Myths: All pond algae is bad

In proper proportions, algae is considered beneficial and reflective of a healthy pond ecosystem. A completely algae-free pond is unnatural! There are simple explanations for an overabundance of algae. Your pond may be receiving too much sunlight or oversaturated in nutrients. You can combat algae by integrating more aquatic plants. They consume the nutrients that attract algae in the first place. And don’t forget, your fish enjoy snacking on algae that cling to rocks!

Myth: You had to test and treat pond water daily

Rivers, lakes, and oceans aren’t tested and plenty of wildlife thrive in their waters! If your pond isn’t chemically dependent, then there is nothing to test. A balanced pond with menial maintenance should remain healthy throughout the year. Granted, there might be outside forces that can alter water chemistry, but as a rule, you won’t need to test your pond water.

Myth: Large ponds mean more maintenance

It is actually much easier to achieve a healthy, stable system with more water, not less. The bigger the water feature, the easier the maintenance! Small water features don’t have the flow or capacity necessary for long-term stability. This is not to say small ponds cannot achieve balance. A properly designed pond will become more stable with each passing year as plants, bacteria colonies, and other vital life become established, regardless of size.

Pond Myths: Ponds are breeding grounds for mosquitos

Mosquitoes breed in still, standing water. Water in a well-designed pond has lots of movement if not constant. Also, ponds support fish, frogs, toads, and other wildlife that are natural predators of mosquitoes!

Myth: All the fish will be eaten by predators

Sure, there are predators that would love to snack on your fish, but there are many modern solutions available to keep your fish safe! A great way to deter predators is by using decoys such as a floating alligator or a blue heron. You can also install a built-in fish cave or faux log fish cave which creates a safe retreat for your fish to hide in. Additional solutions include netting that covers your pond and the criss-crossing of fishing line over your pond. Both have proven effective methods for keeping herons from wading in pond waters. Contact us for more information.
