Watch out for a hot Dallas koi pond!

Something to worry about in August—a hot Dallas koi pond!  When the weather stays hot all day and night, your pond water can get very warm.  You may notice some changes to your pond once the pond water temperature rises above 80 degrees Farenheit. Your plants might droop or look tired and your fish may appear distressed, even struggling for air close the the pond surface.

Cooler water can hold larger amounts of oxygen than warm water.  As the water warms up, your fish become more active.  At the same time, they will then require more oxygen, right when there is less available!

Like humans, stressed fish are more susceptible to diseases when they’re not feeling up to par. Since most pond owners stock their water gardens with cold water fish, it’s even more important to know if your pond is becoming uncomfortably warm.

Fish aren’t the only pond inhabitants who increase their activity in warmer weather. Bacteria, viruses, and parasites also tend to increase which means diseases can spread quicker.

What about the plants?

It’s not just fish that can be affected by warm water temperatures. Your pond plants might also start to show the effects of extreme heat. Water lettuce and water hyacinth can turn yellow and burn.  The pads of your waterlily might also begin to turn a brownish color and start to decay.

Since the leaves of a waterlily help shade the pond and keep it cooler, maintaining the plant’s health is a priority. Fortunately, it takes a long time for pond water to reach 80 degrees, and you have solutions available to assist with cooling.

Is your Dallas koi pond too hot?

You can use a pond thermometer to check the temperature of your pond water. If you find the water nearing 80 degrees, you can increase oxygen with a pond aerator. You can also perform a partial water change and add cooler water. Just remember to detoxify the pond after adding municipal water – for the safety of your fish.

Keep in mind, you don’t need to take your pond’s temperature every day – especially if you have an ecosystem pond with proper circulation and filtration. Simply watch for tell-tale signs like fish gasping for air at the surface of the water or near a waterfall. That’s typically the first sign that the pond is overheated and needs oxygen.

The number one way to help a hot pond:  make sure there is a depth of over two feet.   The bottom of the pond remains cooler and fish can stay at the lower depth if it is available.

In addition, aquatic plants help cool a pond provided one-third to one-half of the pond’s surface area is covered. Waterlilies, mosaic plant, and water lettuce are all great options for shading the surface of your pond. Of course, natural overhead shade from trees, bushes, and even your house will help.

Another item to consider is your pond circulation.  Your biological and mechanical filters should be placed across the pond from each other so that all areas of the pond are skimmed and the water circulated.

Your waterfall and/or stream also plays a big role in the oxygenation of pond water. Oxygen enters the water when there is air and water interacting. Streams and waterfalls create turbulence which increases oxygen levels.

Rocks and gravel are used to naturalize a water feature, create waterfalls, and increase the biological activity in and around the entire pond. Rocks and gravel create a natural feel for the entire water garden. And simply put, they’re an important ingredient in the overall ecosystem pond.

2. Gravel Enhances the Ecosystem

First and foremost, gravel provides a habitat for beneficial microorganisms in the pond. Fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects feed on these minute organisms, as well as bacteria and algae that live on the rocky shore. These bacteria help break down decaying plant matter and fish waste, turning it into usable plant nutrition, which is then consumed by pond plants over and over again in the aquatic “circle of life.”

Without the rocks and gravel, the bacteria would not thrive and the decaying plant matter and fish waste would accumulate on the pond bottom, getting deeper and deeper. This is the muck that you slip on if you’ve ever walked in a pond without rocks and gravel. Far less muck accumulates when you have rocks and gravel in a pond, which also means less maintenance.

3. Holds Liner in Place

Just like you use a rock to keep a napkin from blowing away at your family picnic, installing gravel over pond liner helps to hold the liner in place. If you don’t use rock and gravel, air bubbles can form underneath, and on occasion, pond liner can bubble up over the surface of the pond creating a Loch Ness monster of sorts.

A beautiful DFW koi pond can make any yard complete.  But you don’t want to start digging your pond until you know exactly where you want to put it and why.  Here are five things we recommend considering when building a DFW koi pond.

DFW koi pond: Terrain

You can’t always change what is already there.  For example, a pond dug out of rocks may not be the best option.  A lot of people think they want the pond in one place but when they take a good look around, they realize another space is better.  Don’t be nervous to change your plans due to your surroundings.  And remember, natural steep inclines are beautiful places for a waterfall.

Sun vs. shade

This can be a tricky one, as there are advantages to both.  Think about your yard in the summer.  Is it heavily shaded or full sun?  Or some of both?  A shaded DFW koi pond is beautiful but can add extra leaf debris.

A water feature in full sun may be less susceptible to leaf debris, but algae can thrive in these conditions even with adequate filtration. Adding an ionizer and/or an auto doser can help.

Remember, too, that your fish will want a break from the summer sun’s heat. Incorporate aquatic plants to cover some of the surface or install a fish cave to provide respite from the sun. A balance of sun and shade is a good thing, and you probably want to create your feature where it will get at least a little bit of both.

They’re pretty darn cute.  But more than that, pond frogs can play an important role in the ecosystem. Some say the number of pond frogs you have can be a great indictor of how healthy your pond is.

Goodbye Harmful Insects!

Looking to keep some insects away—try pond frogs! .  They keep mosquito populations down and also keep away other annoying garden pests, such as slugs and rodents.

Hosting pond frogs and other amphibians at your pond reduces the need for harmful pesticides.  We recommend keeping fertilizers and pesticides away from the frogs (and your pond in general!)

Who likes water?pond frogs, of course!

Amphibians such as a pond frog, toad, salamander, and newt go to water to breed and lay their eggs.  Tadpoles need water to live, so it makes sense that frogs would gravitate toward ponds. Be aware, though!  Koi love to eat tadpoles! Make sure there is a place for frog eggs to hatch and mature out of the way of nibbling koi fish.  Try to ensure that the force of the waterfall doesn’t push the eggs and tadpoles over the edge toward system.

Permanent Shelter: A well-located rock pile can also lure toads, salamanders, and newts to your pond. They can be made out of, well, rocks … as well as bricks or broken concrete. The rock pile should receive both sun and shade. For example, in Dallas, you’ll want to put the pile in a mostly shady spot.

It is very important that your pond frogs get the right amount of sun and shade.  Just like humans, they need both to regulate their body temperatures. They also prefer grass that is a little longer to hide from predators while traveling between ponds.

You Can’t Lead A Frog to Water

It’s great to want pond frogs, toads, and salamanders in your pond to complete an ecosystem, but you should be patient. Don’t go to a store and purchase these animals to put into your pond. In many places, it is illegal to release certain species into the wild because they are detrimental to native plants and animals.

If you bring pond frogs in from stores or wetlands, chances are they will not stay.  They might not be able to s

urvive in the wild.  And don’t catch them from any local pond or wetland.  It’s never a good idea to remove animals from their natural habitats.
