Zillow data is one of the reasons behind the backyard pond rising in popularity. Backyards are now mentioned on the houses that Zillow deems to be within the top five, meaning that if your backyard has cool features like a pond or waterfall, chances are it’ll be seen as more desirable and given a higher value.

Backyards are the new luxury item for home buyers, once overshadowed by grand kitchens and even grander walk in closets, backyards are the focal point of homes. This new data suggests that maybe the pandemic had something to do with how we now want to live – outdoors in our peaceful little oasis, something we can use as an extension of our homes. Backyard Ponds, waterfalls and water features are the best way to do that.

Enhance the Beauty of your Backyard with a Backyard Pond

The most obvious reason to install a backyard pond is for aesthetic purposes. Ponds enhance the natural beauty of any outdoor space and create a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for meditation and relaxation when the world gets overwhelming. Adding aquatic plants to you pond can bolster this feeling of serenity.

You can also put fish into your pond, like koi fish or goldfish, for some beautiful outdoor pets that will give you hours of entertainment and calm as you watch them flow through the water without a care in the world. Ponds act as a natural focal point in an outdoor space, and since everyone gets excited to see fish in a pond, its a great choice!

Provide a home for wildlife with a Backyard Pond

Providing a habitat for local wildlife like birds, turtles, fish and frogs is simply with the help of a backyard pond. Not only do ponds provide you with benefits but they also provide wildlife with food and shelter, creating a healthy and robust ecosystem full of biodiversity. Watching the wildlife interact with your pond is a source of endless enrichment and fascination for you, your kids and even your indoor pets! Cats and dogs will be thankful for something to watch out the window.

Create a Relaxing Ambiance

The sounds created by flowing water are some of the most relaxing sounds on the planet. Just imagine how peaceful it would be coming from the comfort of your backyard? The gentle sound of water helps reduce stress levels and promote relaxation, and it can even help drown out other noisy sounds like cars on your street or music that a neighbor might be playing just a little too loud.

Increase Property Value with a Backyard Pond

Finally, installing a backyard pond boosts the value of your property. If you decide to sell your house one day, a well designed and maintained pond adds a touch of class and elegance to your house, making it much more attractive to potential buyers. A pond can also set your house apart from others on the market that don’t have an eye-catching feature that makes your outdoor space shine. Contact us to see how you can get a backyard pond of your own!

There is an age-old debate amongst the pond building community regarding whether or not to use pond gravel. Ask any pond professional what their stance is and they are bound to provide you with a long-winded, yet well-supported, definitive answer. We are pro gravel and here are five reasons why.

Liner Will Stay in Place

Installing gravel over a pond liner will help keep the liner in place. This is just like how you can use a rock to keep a napkin from blowing away in the wind at a picnic. If you don’t use rock and gravel and the liner moves, air bubbles can form underneath. This bubbling can lead to your pond liner rising up over the surface of your pond overtime. This is creating an unappealing formation in the middle of your beautiful water feature.

Slip Prevention

Many pond owners like to wade into their pond to trim aquatic plants or interact with their fish. If you are that pond owner, then you are certainly familiar with how slippery a pond liner is below the surface. It is much safer to enter your pond when there is a layer of gravel to step on.

Pond Gravel Protects Liner from Sun

Just like how the color of your furniture may begin to fade when placed in front of a window for too long, your pond liner can too be damaged by the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Utilizing a layer of gravel will help to increase your liner’s longevity by protecting it from the sun and its harmful rays.

Gravel Enhances the Ecosystem

Gravel provides a habitat for beneficial microorganisms which in turn can attract healthy bacteria to your pond. These minute organisms become food for fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. It is also food for bacteria and algae that live on the rocky shore. These bacteria break down decaying plant matter and fish waste, turning it into usable plant nutrition.

Without gravel, this decaying plant matter and fish waste will simply pile up on the bottom of your pond. This will be creating an icky, slippery layer of muck. Reduce the amount of muck in your pond by installing rock and gravel. You’ll find this practice will reduce required maintenance overall as well!

Gravel Naturalizes the Pond

In addition to being an essential ingredient to the overall ecosystem of your pond, rocks and gravel help to create a natural feel for your entire water garden! They can be used to naturalize a water feature, create waterfalls, and increase the biological activity in and around the entire pond. Use gravel to blend your water feature into the natural landscape in your yard.

In Conclusion

Gravel not only helps to support the ecosystem of your pond but it also protects your liner. This makes your pond safer to walk in and enhances the natural feel of your entire water garden. Next time you are asked about gravel and its importance, use these five reasons to support why you are pro-gravel too! Contact us to see how we can build a pond for you!
